Emotional abuse is just as terrible as physical abuse.
The problem with emotional abuse is that you don’t even see it coming, it crawls up on you bit by bit. You decide to forgive this act, let go of that one time he was exceptionally rude to you, and before you know it, it becomes the norm, and you start making excuses for his abusive behavior.
You’re in that bubble, everyone close to you might see the alarming signs, but you’re either too consumed by it to even notice, or you could be putting up with it because you think you’re in love.
We came across an article on Huffington Post with women sharing their experience with emotional abuse under the hashtag #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, which you can check out here.
We knew that some of you might be able to relate to several of the tweets over there, and which could bring back bad memories. You’ll often find a lot of articles out there addressing physical and emotional abuse as a concept, but real-life examples are often missing. And real-life examples could possibly be what you need to get your wake-up call.
1. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but tries to control your every move.
2. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but calls you every half an hour or 20 times a day, and if you don’t answer just once, you’re in big trouble.
3. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but embarrasses you in front of your friends, and maybe everyone in the street by shouting at you and picking up a fight in public.
4. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but thinks he has the right to control every single aspect of your life, like what you wear.
5. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but threatens to kill himself if you decide to leave him.
6. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but shouts at you for half an hour because you cut your hair without "his permission."
7. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but always complains about you not being there for him or not giving him enough attention.
8. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but tries to destroy all the friendships you have which he doesn’t approve of.
9. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but makes a huge fuss when you want to do something on your own, or doesn’t let you go anywhere without him.
10. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but often has something to say about the way you look or how ugly your outfit is.
11. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but treats you like his own property, something he possesses rather than someone he’s in a relationship with.
12. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but he never stops arguing; an argument with him will go on for hours.
13. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but always blames his negative/aggressive behavior on how the world has treated him, aka the victim syndrome.
14. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but you’re not allowed to stay mad at him for more than 10 minutes, he keeps on apologizing over and over, promising he won’t do it again (Is that the 30th time he did that? I lost count). If you don’t forgive him instantly, you won’t hear the end of it.
15. #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou, but you feel like you’re trapped and can’t get out of this relationship. Well, guess what? You’re not. Imagine how much strength it took you to hold onto something that bad for you over and over again? It takes much less strength to walk away. The sooner you do that, the better for you.
But let's just get one thing straight, emotional abuse is not something only men are responsible for, women are capable of inflicting, and causing the same damage as well!
