We’re not speaking for ourselves when we express our shock at the phrase that was mentioned in the Ramadan 2024 series, Kamel El-Adad 2 “I don’t understand your way of thinking! Are we in the 90s?!” All the 90s kids are not kids anymore. The youngest 90s kids are 25 now! Wow! Time has really changed and Gen-Z is referring to us (since I’m a 90s kid) as if we’re old. This phrase has brought to our attention that plenty of things have changed since the 90s compared to our current lives now in 2024, including lifestyle, fashion, beauty, food, interests, and a lot more. That said, here’s how things have changed since the 90s.
Can't Go Shopping For A Mother's Day Gift? Here Are Deep Sentimental Ways To Show Her Love!
Dial phone vs smartphones
Ask someone born in the 90s to mimic answering the phone. Ask a Gen-Z person to do the same and notice the difference. The 90s person is going to do an old telephone sign with their hands mimicking the actual 90s phone, while the younger person will simply slide up or to the right, mimicking how we actually answer the phone now.
Who can't recall using a dial phone? The ones with buttons on a wire that came with them. Step back in time a little, and you'll see that phones had dial rings instead of buttons when they were all around you. But how times have changed. We've stepped into the smartphone era. If someone had told me when I was a kid that touch phones would be invented, I would have assumed they were kidding. But these days, smartphones have fully taken over our lives!
Blackboards vs smartboards
One of the very things I saw at school were chalkboards and chalk; if I ever saw them again, I would be filled with nostalgia. Unfortunately, I won't see them any time soon. We now have digital boards in our classrooms. Everything has a computer connected to it. The information inside the screen can move around with hand motions. As long as you can write with your finger, why need a chalkboard?
Cassettes vs music apps
Addressing all the millennials reading this article, do you remember Amr Diab, Mohamed Foad, Ihab Tawfik, and Hisham Abbas cassettes that we used to buy instantly once they were out and listen to continuously in our cars and at home? In the 1990s, cassettes were extremely popular, and in the succeeding century, CDs became increasingly popular. But now that we have USBs and online storage,. We even have online music apps like Anghami, Deezer, and SoundCloud, where we can listen to any song whenever we want.

MSN Messenger vs chatting apps
I shed a few tears, along with many others, when MSN chose to stop using its messenger. The "hip" thing that we did as teenagers is no longer relevant. Instead, we have the widely used Facebook chat and WhatsApp. Do you remember the MSN nudges and winks? These were the best days of our lives, weren’t they?
Long lines to pay bills vs online payments
This is probably one of the things we don’t miss in the 90s. Standing in long lines to pay bills or get a car license is no longer a problem. When we first witnessed this change that we could now pay all of our bills online, it probably was the happiest day in our lives. The days of having to wait in line to pay your utility bills are long gone. Online payments are fairly simple for all of them!

Video games (Atari) vs XBOX or PS
Does the name Mario ring a bell, anyone? Who can recall that game, either black or gray, with a tiny screen that came with a hundred games installed? Conflicts over who gets to keep it the longest would come up frequently. Or the wildly popular Atari that everyone considered to be "cool"? But that is the past. Nowadays, kids and adults play video games using XBOX and PS. Even the games are more advanced, with higher quality and awesome graphics.
VCR vs Torrent
When I was a kid, renting movies and VCRs was popular. Perhaps all of us at some point owned a VCR in our living rooms with a whole library of movies. I had no idea that both of those items would eventually become outdated. These days, the world is filled with Netflix, torrents, and plenty of applications, where you can download movies or TV shows. VCRs have been replaced by laptops, and these things have taken the place of film cassettes!
Memorizing contact information vs saving it on a smartphone
You had to write down or commit crucial phone numbers to memory back in the 1990s. Now? It's just a little strange. Now, if you tell someone you memorized their number, it makes you seem as if you're obsessed with them.
Showing up at friends’ homes
In the 1990s, we recall unexpectedly showing up at friends' houses to ask if they wanted to hang out. Most people in today's world usually need to make preparations ahead of time. We’re not saying that it was okay to knock on someone’s door without informing them. However, this is how things used to be.
Using a physical map vs the GPS
It's sometimes difficult to imagine that people managed to get around without the convenience of a handy GPS unit, yet in the 1990s, road maps were a fully acceptable navigational aid.
Fashion and beauty trends
Well, this particular part may take us a whole article, but we can simply say that the 90s fashion and beauty are extremely different from nowadays. Although today’s fashion and makeup are extremely quirky and unique, we still take a thing or two from the 90s and make them a popular trend again.
We’ve changed too!
Remember as a 90s kid, you probably spent most of your time outdoors, playing with friends, hanging out, or running errands. Nowadays, people only tend to go to their work or school and return quickly to their little nest to keep browsing the internet and checking their social media accounts. Moreover, most educated people now have more liberated minds since they know more information about the world around them.
