Now, On to Our Interview with Nadine Abdel Ghaffar…
1- We've heard that 'Forever is Now 4' will have a unique approach. Can you share more about this?
Absolutely! This year, 'Forever is Now' blurs the boundaries between past and future more than ever before. We’re introducing AI artists the Saudi Artist Daniah Al Saleh and the American/ Egyptian multidisciplinary artist Hassan Ragab for the first time, alongside traditional and contemporary mediums, which adds a fascinating layer of dialogue between the digital and the ancient. This edition emphasizes the role of the artist and the audience as modern archaeologists—each uncovering stories embedded in both history and innovation.
2- Can you take us behind the scenes and share how you choose the theme for the exhibition each year?
The process of choosing the theme each year is deeply collaborative and reflective of the evolving global art landscape. Our aim is to explore how Egypt’s rich heritage can resonate within contemporary global conversations. For this edition, we had added the technology as an element in our curatorial concept to focus on the intersection of technology and tradition, allowing artists to reinterpret the timelessness of the pyramids within the context of today’s rapidly advancing world. We closely observe global social, cultural, and artistic and design trends as a theme that bridges these elements with our iconic location. Additionally, we are fortunate to have an esteemed curating board that works closely with our internal team. Some of these key curators include Giovanna Cicutto, Gaia Jacquet-Matisse, Hamza Elserafi, and others who significantly contribute to shaping each year’s unique narrative.
3- We’re always blown away by the artists you choose each year! What’s the process like for picking them?
Selecting artists is both an exciting process. We prioritize diversity geographically, conceptually, and in terms of artistic medium. Our goal is to curate a roster of artists who have distinct voices yet align with our vision of creating dialogues between the ancient and the modern. Our curatorial team conducts thorough research on artists worldwide, while we also receive many submissions from artists inspired by Egypt’s timeless beauty and history. What matters most is that the artists we select can engage with the Pyramids in meaningful and innovative ways. Our curating board, along with our advisory board, plays a key role in this selection, offering valuable insight and guidance to ensure we maintain a dynamic and resonant dialogue between tradition and contemporary art.
4- We know you chose the pyramids from the beginning for a reason, but could we ever see the exhibition in another archaeological site, like Luxor, for example?
The Pyramids are truly iconic, and they embody a universal connection to time and human achievement, which is why they were our first choice. However, we’re always dreaming about future possibilities, and Luxor, with its own rich history and monumental structures, would be an incredible setting. We’re definitely open to exploring other archaeological sites in the future.
5- If you could describe this year’s edition in three words, what would they be?
I’d say innovative, timeless, and transformative.
6- What challenges have you faced in launching this exhibition from the start until now, and how have you tackled them?
Each year brings its own set of challenges, from logistical issues at such a historic and sensitive site to navigating global uncertainties. For instance, coordinating international artists, especially during a pandemic, was challenging. But our team is incredibly resilient, and we tackle these issues by staying flexible and always finding creative solutions. We work closely with local authorities and experts to ensure we respect and protect the Pyramids, while also creating impactful art experiences.
7- We all know, it’s tough to keep the same passion year after year. What’s your secret to staying motivated?
The incredible energy of the artists, the rich history of the Pyramids, and the enthusiasm of the community we’ve built all keep me inspired. Art has this amazing ability to constantly evolve and surprise, and every year feels like we’re embarking on a new journey. Plus, seeing how much the exhibition resonates with people both in Egypt and globally gives me the drive to keep pushing boundaries and innovating.
8- We know you always dream big! What does the future hold for Art D’Egypte?
The future is bright! We’re looking to expand our reach even further, continuing to push the boundaries of where and how art and culture can be experienced. We plan to engage more deeply with digital art and technology, introducing innovative projects to both new and historic locations. Of course, we’re always exploring ways to expand globally, sharing Egypt’s rich legacy with the world while introducing new narratives through international partnerships and collaborations.
In addition, we’re looking to expand the reach of CulturVator, our global brand dedicated to spreading culture and art across borders. With this initiative, we aim to foster cultural exchange, inspire creativity, and bring the world closer through the power of art and storytelling.
