Netflix has recently launched a drama series called “From Scratch” that revolves around two lovers who meet in Florence, Italy and the spark of their love ignites their lives and changes it drastically. While the love story isn’t the hearts and roses that we’re expecting, it is a beautiful story of how love can push people to become better versions of themselves. Aside from the aphrodisiac love story, “From Scratch” dazzles us with the beauty of Italy and reminds us why it is the perfect honeymoon destination. Let’s dig into the details to find out why this show is special.
Amy is an art student who pursues her passion by flying to Italy to study art. Initially, she wanted to study there for 6 weeks and then go back home. However, her passion and ambition to become an artist makes her give up going to law school (her father’s wish) and decide to be an artist. Throughout her stay in Florence, we get to see the stunning paintings and artwork of some of the most famous Italian artists, such as Michelangelo, Sandro Botticelli, Caravaggio, and others. The main attractions that you can see when you visit Florence are the Duomo by Brunelleschi, a bell tower by Giotto, The Galleria dell'Accademia that displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture, and The Uffizi Gallery that exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.”
Lino is a Sicilian chef who knows the art of cooking and appreciates the beauty of Italian cuisine. In the very first episodes, we see how Lino tries to win Amy’s heart by inviting her to his restaurant and making her everything on the menu. We get to see several plates that look more like art than food. Aside from pizza, Italy is known for its fantastic food and authentic flavor that no other country can master. From Ravioli to Risotto to Lasagna, the options are limitless.
The best thing about Italians is that they’re mostly so similar to Egyptians. The way they talk, eat, laugh, and use hand gestures is so close to our culture. Moreover, they’re super welcoming and easy to talk to, even if you don’t know the language. You’ll find a way to communicate with them and see how friendly they are. However, we suggest that you get a beginner’s Italian language book to help you around. The Italians will really appreciate that you’re making an effort to understand and be understood by them.
Florence & Sicily
From the very first moment Amy steps into Florence, we get to see the beautiful streets, vintage hotels, and an overall feeling that this place belongs to your heart. It is a city that is noted for its culture, Renaissance art, architecture, and monuments. The capturing city also contains several museums and art galleries. Throughout the series, we see that Amy heads to Sicily to see Lino’s parents and we cannot describe enough how breathtaking the city is. Its rich history can be seen in places like the Valley of the Temples, the ruins of 7 monumental, Doric-style Greek temples, and more.
The Italian music is distinctive and ear-capturing, and the best thing about “From Scratch” is that it mesmerized us with some Italian songs throughout the show. Although you can listen to Italian music at home on your phone, listening to “lasciatemi cantare” while sipping your cappuccino in an Italian restaurant is something else!
In our humble opinion, no language in the world sounds more musical than Italian! Listening to natives chat and joke around in Italian is music to the ears. Moreover, it is a fun language to learn. You don’t have to dig deep and learn grammar, but some basic words that facilitate communication are enough to get you fascinated with the language.
Although Italy can get a bit cold in the winter, it is still acceptable weather that you can enjoy, especially if you’re a winter lover. The weather in November is approximately 16-20C, which is great. However, if you prefer hotter weather, we suggest you visit Italy in May. We also recommend that you stay away from tourist months (July-August) because it gets really crowded.
Italy is one of the closest European honeymoon destinations to Egypt. The tickets are affordable and it takes around 3 hours to be there. People from all over the world come to visit the beauty of Italy, so we’re lucky that it is close to us.
